Usenet Providers: Questions to Ask
Joining an external newsgroup provider has
many advantages; the largest being that one
can usually access Usenet from any location
where they can get an Internet connection (same
does not hold true for Usenet provided by one's
ISP -- one usually has to be physically located
on their ISP's network before they can access
Usenet). So with an external newsgroup provider
one can continue to receive Usenet access from
hotels, Internet cafes, airport wi-fi locations,
etc.
Below are just a few questions to consider
before joining any newsgroup service provider.
One has to first ask themself what they're really
looking (in terms of service) in a newsgroup
provider.
For those interested in the text-only newsgroups
on Usenet
-Can I access my newsgroup account from anywhere
in the world; or does it always have to be used
from my home?
-How is access given; via username (login)
and password? (usually best to access via login/password)
-Do you carry my favorite newsgroup?
-What is retention rate on your newsgroups?
-How is my privacy protected? (no logging would
be nice)
For those interested in the binary files
available on Usenet (in addition to those above)
-what is completion rate on your servers? (you're
looking for anthing over 95%)
-What is retention rate on your servers? (this
depends more on how many days back you want
access to postings)
-How is my privacy protected? (no logging would
be nice)
